Birthday boy Rana Daggubati feels blessed to be working in three languages with some of the best directors, he tells Sangeetha Devi Dundoo.

Rana Daggubati, who celebrates his birthday on Wednesday, feels both blessed and lucky. “When I started working in films, I had made a wish list — I wanted to work in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films. I am lucky that I am now part of all the three industries so early in my career,” he says with a smile.

Rana’s new Telugu film, Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum, directed by Krish Jagarlamudi, will be launched on Wednesday. “I believe that the stories choose me and not otherwise. Krish’s film is an action revenge drama, where I am a stage artiste. In the last 10 years, I haven’t seen a representation of Telugu theatre in our films,” he says.

He’s been fortunate, he admits, to have worked with directors like Sekhar Kammula, Puri Jagannadh, Rohan Sippy and now Ram Gopal Varma, Vetrimaaran and Krish. “Incidentally, most of these directors moved away from their regular genre and explored an alternative space when they came to me,” he says.

2012 looks promising with Naa Ishtam and Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum in Telugu, Department in Hindi and Vada Chennai in Tamil.

Rana spent his growing years in Chennai and given his fluency in Tamil, one would have expected him to have done a Tamil film earlier. “Of course, I thought I would get to do a Tamil film after Leader. Surprisingly, Rohan (Sippy) called me for Dum Maaro Dum and the Hindi debut happened,” says Rana.

The actor was earlier slated to do a Tamil-Telugu bilingual with Selvaraghavan, which has been put on hold. “Somehow our timings never coincide. Meanwhile, Vetrimaaran offered Vada Chennai. His films Aadukalam and Polladhavan are among my favourite films. Vada Chennai is a gangster film with Simbhu and me,” adds Rana.

Before that, we will see Rana in Ram Gopal Varma’s Department and Prakash Toleti’s Naa Ishtam. Speaking of Department, Rana says, “I grew up watching RGV’s films like Shiva and much later Satya and Company. I am amazed at RGV’s understanding of how the mafia works. I don’t think any other director in India can match him on that front.” Department is a drama between an underworld don (Amitabh Bachchan) and cops (Sanjay Dutt and Rana).

Despite being part of big projects, Rana’s last two releases — Dum Maaro Dumand Nenu Na Rakshashi — didn’t set the BO on fire. “DMD got a good opening and helped me in my career. It was because of DMD that I got Department. WithNenu…, I knew I was doing a dark film. People expected another Pokiri kind of film from Puri sir. Having said that, I must mention that I really enjoyed working in the film. I believe that, sometimes, you learn more from your failures than through success.”

On a parting note, he mentions that it’s been a series of celebrations at home. “My uncle (Venkatesh)’s film Bodyguard’s audio was launched on his birthday on Tuesday and I am starting my new film to mark my birthday. There’s plenty of reason to celebrate.”

Victory Venkatesh continues steal hearts with the audio release of his new film “Bodyguard” on the 13th of December 2011.  Starring Venkatesh, Trisha and Saloni, the film directed by Gopichand Mallineni and produced by Bellamkonda Suresh “Bodyguard” is scheduled to release on the 12th of January 2012. The film is an official remake of Malayalam super hit “Bodyguard”.

Victory Venkatesh is also essaying the role of Swami Vivekananda’s to be directed by Mani Shankar. Currently, the script work of the film is under progress and proposed shooting will start in 2012.

Apart from teaming up with Mahesh Babu in “Seethama Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu” from December onwards, Victory Venkatesh has also given the nod for Meher Ramesh’s next film as well. Written by Gopi Mohan and Kona Venkat, the film will be produced by Paruchuri Prasad under Untied Movies banner. The film is is expected to be a high action entertainer.

‘Bhakta Prahlada’, the first Telugu talkie, was released on this day in the year 1931.

The Telugu film industry got together on Thursday to celebrate the completion of its 80th year, since the release of the first Telugu talkie ‘Bhakta Prahlada’ on this day in 1931. Interestingly, this happened within six months of the release of ‘Alam Ara’, the first Hindi talkie.

The who’s who of the celluloid world here was present as Information & Public Relations Minister D.K. Aruna hoisted a specially-designed flag for Telugu cinema on the premises of the Filmnagar Cultural Centre after which veteran actress Krishnaveni and actor K. Raghava cut the cake.

The general strike in the struggle for a separate Telangana did appear to cast its shadow on what would otherwise have been a very colourful event.

Addressing the gathering comprising producers, directors, actors, actresses, technicians, and representatives of the 24 crafts of the film industry, actor-director-producer Dasari Narayana Rao said the present generation did not know about the birth of Telugu cinema and its glorious journey since the talkie hit the screen.

Not many knew that the first silent film in the world was released in 1903 and in India in 1913.

Among those present were A.P. Film Chamber of Commerce president D. Suresh Babu, Movie Artistes Association president M. Muralimohan, Telugu Film Producers’ Council represented by Burugupalli Shivaramakrishna, Allu Arvind, and M. Mohan Babu, Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce president M. Vijayendar Reddy.

Mr. Suresh Babu said a coordinated effort was on to chronicle all facets of Telugu cinema beginning from the ‘mooki’ (silent) to the talkie days. Care would be taken to see that all the significant developments in all aspects of the industry on its journey were documented, he said, appealing to all those who may have photographs related to Telugu cinema to mail them or hand over copies to the Film Chamber so that they could be used suitably.

Supposedly the superstars play brothers in the film. The mahurat was held on the Vijayadasami day, October 6, 2011. D Suresh Babu, Shyam Prasad Reddy, V V Vinayak and S S Rajamouli attended the mahurat. In the formal puja organized by Dil Raju, Dasari Narayan Rao sounded the clap and K Raghavendra switched on the camera.

Venkatesh is currently shooting for Bodyguard and Mahesh for The Businessman. Venkatesh will start shooting for SVSC next month and Mahesh is expected to be on sets of SVSC after the completion of The Businessman.

Everything going well, hotshot Rana Daggubati is all geared up to endorse a national brand, befitting his expanding pan-India presence.

The lanky actor’s resolve to move to Bollywood with Dum Maro Dum seems to have fetched him enough mileage and now, with his next Hindi film Department on the floors, his stocks are soaring and drawing the attention of top brands who are eager to rope him for lavish campaigns.

“Talks are on but nothing is finalised yet,” says a source close to the actor. However, another source adds that the towering actor got offers even during the making of Dum Maro Dum; and that he was supposed to promote a mobile network but dropped it at the last minute.

“He was about to board a flight for a photo shoot for that campaign but we dropped it, since we felt that he should begin with a much bigger brand to add value to his brand equity,” he adds.

If he takes up the endorsements, then he would be a few notches up his T-town colleagues like NTRJr, Ram Charan and Allu Arjun, who are mostly roped in to cater to region-specific buyers.
